In 2004 ENSI has started to developed its relationship with UN organisations:
In June 2004 ENSI has been invited by Director General of UNESCO to become an institutional partner in the framework of the UN Decade on Education for Sustainable Development. Important meetings in Paris at UNESCO Headquarters and the UNESCO regional office in Bangkok helped operationalise this partnership and to draw up a common understanding.
In December 2005 ENSI has been adopted as observer in the Bureau of the UNECE-ESD Steering Committee.

SUPPORT
2006: ENSI decided to support the development an new EU-Network project: SUPPORT with Norwegian co-ordination. The goal of the Project SUPPORT (a Comenius Lifelong Learning Programme) is to promote and enhance the quality of education for
sustainable development by linking schools, research institutions and communities.

Regionalisation Asia-Pacific
Autumn 2006: ENSI decided on the Annual General Meeting (Vienna) to
enlarge its global perspective to Asia-Pacific and to collaborate with local
partners on our common topic of education for sustainable development.

Engaging Research on ESD
2006 – 2008: Collaboration with Council of Europe. ENSI installed a new project. Junior researchers and developers in the field of ESD meet annually in a new ENSI project to share expertise, discuss research and build a future oriented network.

2006: ENSI decided to become an international non-profit organisation under Belgian law, this status being in power since December 2009

Engaging youth in sustainable development
2008: In cooperation with the Council of Europe: ENSI published the brochure 'Engaging youth in sustainable development' resp 'pliquer les jeunes dans le développement durable'.

International Conference on ESD in Bordeaux
2008: ENSI participates at the international Conference on ESD in Bordeaux, France and offer bilingual workshops, a panel discussion and keynotesin the field of ‘Progress and possibilities for the UN Decade of ESD in EU member states.

LEARN
2009: ENSI-Conference in Leuven (B), March 2009 ‘Creating learning environments for the future –Sharing knowledge on research and practice’. In the following of the Conference the new ENSI-project LEARN was installed. The focus of the project will lay on the research of effects of a wide range of learning environments which include personal learning environments (ICT), emotional approaches (for example with drama and arts), learnscapes (ecologically shaped school grounds for personal experienced learning), learning in different social environments, in a multiple culture learning society (social learning) and global learning.

2009: In November ENSI President W. Sleurs and Vice President C.Affolter were warmly welcomed in the Republic of Korea and in Japan. Meetings at Koreas National University for Education in Cheongju, at the University Seoul, with the Secretary General of UNESCO Korea and at the 10 years jubilee from Koreas ‘Forest for Life’ project were the highlights in Korea. In Japan ENSI was also had the chance to meet with the Ministry of Education and by the director of IGES, Prof Hamanaka. It was decided to intensify networking with partners from both countries.
2009: ENSI installs a new cooperation with OECD, project ILE and gets accepted as a full project partner (same level as national representatives).
2010: ENSI was working intensely in project LEARN for preparing a COMENIUS proposal. At the final Conference of COMENIUS multilateral network SUPPRORT in Bergen/NO a first draft was presented and has had a promising feedback. ENSI participates with three case studies to the OECD project ILE.
