Eco-schools
The ENSI based Eco-school network (www.oekolog.at) with over 200 registered eco-schools focuses on the topics “Mobility” in 2007/2008 and on “Lifestyle and Consumer Awareness” in 2008/2009. Over 10% of the eco-schools reached the national environment award (see www.umweltzeichen.at/schule).
The Eco-school-network is based and stimulated by ENSI´s philosophy and whole school approach. The ENSI-teacher-team with its scientific advisor Prof. Peter Posch has supported the Eco-school-network from its conceptual development over the pilot phase to the network formation and now prepares the introduction of the “Quality Criteria for ESD-Schools” to the heads of Eco-Schools.
Teacher training
A research project on “Competencies Required of Teachers in the Field of ESD” was carried out in 2006 and will be published in autumn 2007. This study is also part of the Austrian contribution to the Comenius 2 project CSCT (see www.csct-project.org) for which an action research workshop was organized with Prof. Peter Posch at the University of Klagenfurt in October 2006.
In order to implement ESD in teacher training a two year training course for teacher trainers on ESD was developed and carried out in the years 2003-05 under the scientific guidance of the University of Klagenfurt. (see www.umweltbildung.at/bine). Its curriculum was revised in 2006 and the course will be offered again in the years 2008 - 09.
Pupil participation
The ENSI-teacher-team elaborated nine explorative studies of self-regulated participative learning in order to gain some insight into experiences of teachers and principals who initiated student participation in their schools and classrooms. The studies primarily deal with student participation in regular instruction and in cross-curricular project work. The book “9 Times Pupil Participation – Examples from School Practice” presents these nine case studies and a cross case analysis of the studies with a theoretical introduction by Prof. Posch.
