In 2005. Ministry of Science, Education and Sports launched Croatian Educational Standard with goal of modernization of educational system, and teaching practices. Education and Teacher Training Agency implements this policy through teacher training and professional development, advising the teachers and schools and therefore has the potential to enhance and develop ESD. Setting that as the goal, creation of clear ESD policy, as well as relevant capacity building is still to be achieved, where ENSI membership is expected to be of great help. Ministry of Science Education & Sports nominated National board for implementation of DESD, which works closely with Croatian UNESCO representative. The action plan on DESD for next two years has been developed. Next priority is creating the proposal for National Educational Curriculum, which is being prepared. Proposal should light up students’ competences and teaching outcomes related to ESD.

Although Croatia still does not have Strategy for ESD, neither sufficient support for ESD in educational legislative, by implementing of several programs and by developing them on national level according to the principles of ESD, there are many examples of good ESD practices in our schools. Besides Eco-schools program, important to mention are National program for promotion of human rights and responsible citizenship, UNESCO-s program SEMEP (South-East Mediteran Education Program), Program GLOBE and some regional programs implemented by local authorities or NGO-s. In each of those programs schools are encouraged for project work on environmental (including social and cultural) issues, relevant for their local community. ENSI’s SESD Quality Criteria Croatian translation is being prepared.
