National Coordinator

National ENSI work

The Flemish Community of Belgium has been an ENSI member since 1986.
Agenda 21 and the ENSI philosophy have inspired the development of the cross-curricular theme of environmental education in the Flemish educational system (compulsory education).

Sustainable development and teacher education

There is a strong tendency of including education for sustainable development in the curriculum of teacher education.

Therefore, a Comenius 2 project (CSCT) has been set up as an ENSI project, in order to develop a competency based curriculum for sustainable development in initial teaching training and in-service training institutions.

This project, which runs from October 2004 until September 2007, is coordinated by the Flemish higher institute for teacher education KHLeuven and the Curriculum department of the Flemish Ministry of Education and involves 15 partners from 8 different countries.

MOS and Groene School (Green School) project

The department of the Environment of the Flemish Community coordinates the extensive MOS-network of schools that promotes ‘caring of the environment’ at the school (environment). Besides primary and secondary schools, also institutes for higher education can join the project

When primary and secondary schools meet the high-standard quality criteria, they receive the Green School Award. The quality criteria used by MOS are strongly influenced by the Quality Criteria, developed within the SEED and ENSI project.

As in the Quality Criteria, aspects such as planning, participation of all school actors, internal and external communication, structural organization and both educational and environmental gains are strongly emphasised in the MOS project.

The project is strongly linked to the final objectives of primary education and the cross-curricular objectives of secondary education.
