The UNESCO chair "Education, training and research for sustainable development" and the UNITWIN network have joined together to better mobilise the Francophone university world in order to more efficiently and visibly develop policies, abilities and resources for education, training and research and the transfer of knowledge for sustainable development.
The project, developed as part of an extended inter-university partnership, has several objectives :
- To train teachers in order to improve education and training on sustainable development by taking into account the specific environmental, socio-economic and cultural issues of the countries involved.
- Develop education and training systems on sustainable development :
- A course with a qualification such as Masters and advance training courses favouring a more practical approach;
- Various professional training courses for institutions as well as the private sector and civil society.
- Focus on basic and educational research together with the transfer of knowledge.
- Ensure a “global institutional approach” to sustainable development in universities in the network and promote the establishments’ Agenda 21:
- Inform University staff on sustainable development;
- Work with the University’s partners to promote the various aspects of sustainable development;
- Ensure that the University campuses are more integrated in local urban areas by strengthening the relationship between the universities and local authorities, associations, companies and citizens.
- Include in the network information on the scientific developments on sustainable development : UNESCO, OECD, UNEP, AUF (Francophone University Agency), IEPF (Francophone Institute of Energy and Environment), ENSI (Environmental School Initiatives) and distribute this information.
