Education for sustainable development – Whole school approach to sustainability
In most of the German States networks on education for sustainable development are established. More then 2500 Schools are involved on different levels.
Connected tot he UN-Decade for ESD more then 1000 Projects on school and adult education level are part of the nation wide activities of the German National comittee on the UN-Decade.
In the field of research an development of guidelines and sets of criteria Germany developed three basic papers using the background of ensi:
- Guidelines ESD in Secondary Education, Competencies, structures and models of participation
- Quality criteria for ESD schools and learning arrangements
- School profile ESD a guideline to create a school programme.(all publications are available on this website in the area of ensi publications in English and German language)
To integrate the field of global development into the framework of ESD the German conference of Ministries of Education and the Federal Ministry of international cooperation developed a frame work curriculum which help schools to integrate ESD and the question of global development in all subjects mainly on primary and secondary level. This framework will be further on developed to a whole school approach and integrates more hints and activities in the field of teacher education.
To forster international cooperation with countries from different cultural backgrounds Germany established an international experts networks of Germany, India, Mexico and South Africa. Five experts of each country including experts from Ministries of Education, Universities, Teacher Education authorities and NGOs work on a common understanding of SD and ESD and will develop concepts for Trainig and international cooperation in the field of ESD.
In the field of teacher education a nationwide working group of experts including the ensi coordinator collects and describe examples of good practice and published a basic paper for the ministries of education.
