Teacher Education
General description of the Project
1995 - now
The ENSI Teacher Education program seeks
- To integrate innovative approaches in teacher education programs through environmental education
- To use ENSI experience for action-research based curriculum development in teacher education supporting active open ended learning, dealing with uncertainty and conflicting values.
- To establish win-win partnerships between teacher educators, students and schools involved in environmental initiatives.
- To achieve high quality by joint reflection and analysis of country experiences and by developing options for teacher education policies.
Environmental education as defined & by the OECD-Project "Environment and School Initiatives" (ENSI) is premised upon inter-disciplinarity and the realization of dynamic learning qualities in students in which knowledge is not passively appropriated but actively constructed. Furthermore it relates knowledge to spheres of socially important action and requires the interrogation of assumptions and values that configure controversial issues. Finally it encourages reflexive and responsible action and therefore it contributes to Education for Sustainable Development.
The Teacher Education program offers as major benefits to participating countries
- Exchange and reflection on country experiences and participation in international professional discussion among experts, teacher educators and administrators on innovations in teacher education
- Contribution to improving quality of both teacher education and environmental education regarding practice, policy and theory.

Seminar in Weggis/Switzerland:
Learning from Case Studies of Environmental Education ISBN 978-3-03910-868-8 / US-ISBN 978-0-8204-8046-6 pb. This book is focused on ten action...research and evaluative case studies in environmental education carried out by teacher educators and teachers. The case studies range across five European countries: Austria, Hungary, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland. They are followed by cross-case comparisons which explore issues emerging from the documented reflective practice: aims of environmental education in the educational policy context of the countries, their relationship to the disciplines and the traditional knowledge transmission position, the role of action research approaches for innovation and reflection, and institutional conditions of collaboration in teacher education. This international case study project is research based in adopting professional development approaches that are informed by action research principles. It represents examples of innovation that challenge established practice in schools and teacher education institutions. It provides study material for all who attempt to describe, change and improve their own education practices and who want to adopt an action research approach to professional or program development.Published in english by Regula Kyburz-Graber / Paul Hart / Peter Posch / Ian Robottom (eds), 2006 -
